Identidade das famílias afrodescendentes : experiências intergeracionais, significados e processos

Abstract

Participaram no estudo 26 indivíduos afrodescendentes (M = 40,96 anos, DP = 14,42), pertencentes a 11 famílias.

Based on systems theory (Von Bertalanffy, 1972) and Bronfenbrenner's ecological model (1986), where family systems are in interaction with diverse contexts, this study aimed to deepen knowledge about the identity of afrodescendant families. The migration of families who identify themselves as afrodescendant to the colonizing countries is associated with the creation of a bicultural identity, where there may be a belonging to both the dominant and the dominated culture. This study was specifically aimed at understanding the identity tension of the families that identify themselves as afrodescendant, namely how they perceive their identity, how its intergenerational transmission occurs, and the role of art in the construction of this identity. The research is qualitative, exploratory, and uses semi-structured interviews. Twenty-six individuals of African descent (M = 40.96 years, SD = 14.42), belonging to 11 families, participated in the study. Data analysis was carried out through thematic analysis, using NVivo software. The main results revealed an identity construct divided between family and personal identity. As for family identity, the extended family, rituals and family rules were identified as relevant for its construction. Intergenerational transmission was identified as having occurred in family contexts and deemed as determinant for personal identity. Personal identity varied between bicultural/tricultural identity, predominantly African country identity, and predominantly Portuguese identity. Salient aspects attributed to African country influences were the way of thinking and acting positively and collectively and linguistic, artistic, and gastronomical traits. Aspetcts associated with Portuguese influences were the controlled and individualistic way of thinking and acting, and the social and labor integration. Finally, a cultural fusion was identified in the data analysis, and various aspects of identity took on different salience depending on the context. Regarding the role of art, music and dance stood out, with music having specific contributions to identity. These results are intended to be a contribution to the deepening of knowledge about the identity of afrodescendant families, a necessary step towards their empowerment.
