Tratamento periodontal cirúrgico

análise dos resultados reportados pelo doente
Authors: Soares, Bruna Lediane Afonso Almeida;

Tratamento periodontal cirúrgico

Abstract

Introduction: Periodontitis represents a major public health problem due to its high prevalence and associated morbidity, considered a source of social inequality. One of the stages in the treatment of periodontal disease involves periodontal surgeries, which is often perceived as painful. Discomfort, pain, and dentinal hypersensitivity are common post-surgical symptoms. Using Patient Reported Outcomes is essential, allowing for a more patient-centered approach. Aim: Analyze whether the outcomes reported by patients after periodontal surgery are dependent on sociodemographic and/or surgical factors. Materials and Methods: A questionnaire was provided to patients undergoing periodontal surgery at FMDUL’s post-graduated periodontology program, consisting of 3 parts, including sociodemographic and surgical data, postoperative symptoms, and satisfaction level. Descriptive and quantitative analyses was carried out using frequencies and inferential analysis using the U Mann-Whitney test and Kruskal-Wallis test (α=0.05). Results: The sample included 20 patients, aged between 25 and 79, the majority of whom were male. The average pain score on the day of surgery was 3.85, but this value decreased over the 3 days after surgery. Analysis of different variables revealed a significant difference (p=0.01) in pain perception related to smoking habits, indicating that smokers perceived higher levels of pain in the post-surgery period when compared to non-smokers. No significant differences were found when pain was related to the other variables. Conclusion: Despite being a stressful and anxious situation, this study concludes that the majority patients undergoing periodontal surgery experience mild to moderate pain, making it a safe procedure. All patients were very satisfied with the care, and the vast majority considered that their expectations were met.
