Peso ao nascer : factores condicionantes

Abstract

This work aims to evaluate the birthweight of newbom babies as a function of physiological and socio-economical variables; the specific objective is to identify those factors that most influence the development of the foetus, i.e., the growth in uterus. The study was based on the data of newbom babies from women who gave birth in the Hospital Garcia de Orta, in Almada, during the períod of January 1992 to December 1995, in total of 11.500 births. Considering the varíable birthweight as a function of the variables sex and order of birth, gestacional age and its square, height, age and weight gain of the mother during pregnancy, number of previous children with low birthweight and, smoking habits from the parents, three models were built for which the coefflcient of determination ranged from 0,40 to 0,50. This work also considered the existence of interaction variables and the detection and treatment of outliers. The study showed the importance of the varíable gestacional age and the effect of "passive smoking" in the birthweight of newbom babies; also, the curves for the 10, 50 and 90 percentiles of birthweight as a function of gestacional age were calculated.
