Do Estado Novo a Novo Estado

Abstract

The present Master’s Final Project proposes the redevelopment of the former Dutch Ferment Factory, located on the western margin of the city of Lisbon, south of the Jamor Urban Park, through the proposal of a new urban space and new temporary accommodation residences. The current theme arises from the interest in re-qualifying and creating spac- es where physical and mental well-being are predominant factors in the pro- posal generating new architectural opportunities that fit the space and fill the existing gaps in the Jamor Sports Complex. Therefore, one of the main objec- tives of this work is to respond to the lack of residential infrastructures for ath- letes and everyone who is involved in high-performance sports in Lisbon, es- pecially users of the Complex. Nevertheless, it was considered imperative to propose an entire urban logic in which the building would be integrated. The activation of the riverside area, near Cruz Quebrada train station, is one of the solutions presented to extend the entire existing space north of the waterfront. The development of this work allowed for a critical application of concepts that enhance and humanize vacant spaces and how they can be qualified, taking into account local needs.
