Abstract

Abstract Soil is a complex and non-renewable natural resource, essential for the equilibrium of the ecosystems and for the provision of food, energy and fibres to humans. This study presents an inquiry and experimental activity about soil porosity. This activity has the particularity of proportionate an interdisciplinary learning experience between mathematics and science. The participants were 28 students of an elementary teacher education degree. They had to answer these questions: What is the porosity of different soils? How to quantitatively represent soil porosity? With this focus, students planned and implemented an inquiry to collect evidences in order to evaluate the soil porosity of three soil samples, with variable control. Afterwards, formulate explanation from evidence. The inquiry was concluded with the exchange of those evidences and justification of the results and conclusions. This interdisciplinary activity promoted in the participants the learning of scientific content related to the soils and aspects associated to the planning of experimental and investigative activities, due to its practical nature and promoter of the skills of reasoning and problem solving.
