Particularidades na alimentação de animais de companhia (Lagomorfos e Roedores)

Abstract

Estima-se que dois em cada três lares portugueses tenham um animal de estimação. Predominam cães, gatos, canários e psitacídeos. No entanto, lagomorfos e roedores de companhia têm vindo a contribuir cada vez mais para aqueles números. Pela importância que os novos animais de companhia têm a nível mundial, vários trabalhos têm sido desenvolvidos com o objectivo de conhecer melhor as suas necessidades nutricionais. Pretende- -se aumentar o seu bem-estar e a sua longevidade. Na primeira parte deste trabalho refere-se a importância da nutrição e alimentação e apresentam-se algumas características fisiológicas e reprodutivas de coelhos anões, porquinhos-da-índia hamsters e chinchilas. Na segunda parte do trabalho apresentam-se os cuidados a ter com a alimentação destes animais, como forma de minimizar a ocorrência de problemas de urolitíase, de insuficiência de Vitamina C, de obesidade e de crescimento anormal dos dentes. Na terceira e última parte referem-se aspectos relativos à produção de misturas de alimentos cujas formulações foram elaboradas a pedido das empresas de “pet food” MESKLIFLOWER e Japan, Pet and Drugs Ltd.
