In this article, we study the relation between the degree of specialization on six different dimensions and the level of technical efficiency in the Spanish hospital sector. The efficiency scores are obtained via DEA techniques applied to several variables and principal factors which summarize the relevant information about an ampler number of variables. The analysis shows that specilization in outpacient consults, intensive care, emergency care or pediatrics tend to increase the hospital efficiency score. Other factors are also found to be significant such as localization in some regions, orientacion toward the public provision an the hospital regional share.
