Phytoplankton trends in a Western Galician Ria under eventual environmental changes

Abstract

The spatial distribution of phytoplankton assemblages, chlorophyll and primary production were studied in the Ria of Pontevedra in Galicia (NW Iberian Peninsula) from October 1997 to October 1998. Throughout the year, the chlorophyll and primary production gradients along the ria's axis were highly dependent on the balance between upwelling and runoff. When the latter prevailed, increased values were measured towards the inner ria, while the opposite pattern was observed during summer upwelling blooms

This work was supported by the Comisión Interministerial de Ciencia y Tecnología (CICYT), under the project Hydrodynamic and silicon cycle in the Pontevedra Ria, contract number MAR96‐1782
