Abstract

La Arqueología produce interpretaciones del pasado sobre la base de los materiales hallados en los yacimientos arqueológicos. Su selección y análisis constituye el registro arqueológico, la materia prima con la que se elaboran las interpretaciones. Ese registro no es algo que exista per se, sino que se construye a lo largo del trabajo de profesionales de la Arqueología. El desarrollo tecnológico ha permitido recientemente un replanteamiento del abordaje de los materiales, posibilitando la recuperación e identificación de numerosos restos microscópicos y dando la posibilidad de ampliar el registro al generar un cambio de dirección en arqueobotánica. Entre estos restos microscópicos los fitolitos están tomando una importancia mayor, ya que debido a su naturaleza inorgánica presentan problemas de conservación menores en comparación con otros. A través de su estudio se puede investigar el uso de plantas no sólo en aquellos casos en los que los restos macrobotánicos no se conservan (sea por razones pre- o postdepositacionales), sino que el análisis conjunto de fitolitos y otros restos micro y macrobotánicos puede ofrecer un cuadro más completo de las actividades relacionadas con la gestión de los recursos vegetales.
