Abstract

When translating medico-legal documents such as informed consent forms, translators face a multidisciplinary linguistic challenge. For the translated document to be an effective means of communication, it is not enough for the translator to be familiar with the specific terminology of several related thematic areas. It is also vital for them to understand the principles behind the document, its purpose and the various manners of presenting the content. This article is intended to explain the logic of the informed consent document, its components and the expected results. Translators may use this information to form a mental picture prior to translation that will serve them as a guide to productive research and successful, satisfactory work.
