El infinito en un libro: la lectura y sus peligros

Abstract

En este artículo, me propongo compartir algunas reflexiones sobre el papel de la lectura en la educación universitaria. En general se está de acuerdo en que la lectura de grandes obras literarias resulta esencial en la formación intelectual. Sin embargo, se desconoce en gran medida cuáles son sus beneficios concretos, así como sus posibles peligros. Como afirma George Steiner, “Leer bien significa arriesgarse mucho. Es dejar vulnerable nuestra identidad, nuestra posesión de nosotros mismos”. ¿Qué ocurre durante el proceso de lectura? ¿Qué sabemos de su impacto estético, emocional, o ético? ¿Cómo educa, en realidad, la literatura? Tradicionalmente se ha estudiado la literatura desde un prisma academicista analizando la vida del autor o el valor estético del texto, relegando al lector a un plano secundario. Considero que, prestando atención a la lectura en sí, analizando cuál es su fuerza para formar parte de la vida real de los lectores, podremos hacer mejor uso de este potente medio para lograr los fines que nos proponemos en la universidad. En concreto, me referiré a siete posibles peligros que entraña la lectura, y trataré de hacer ver que, paradójicamente, solo adentrándonos en ellos, podemos hacer que la lectura sea una experiencia realmente transformadora.
