Abstract

The current state of textile production is characterized by a greater number of pieces being produced and a smaller number of uses per piece and is dominated by the linear model, which contributes to the fashion industry being the fourth most polluting sector in the European Union. The Circular Economy (CE) presents itself as an alternative model, focused on extending the life cycle of each piece, as well as its reuse and recycling. The existing literature considers CE an agent of competitiveness and innovation, with the potential to improve business performance. This investigation focuses on how CE applied to the fashion industry acts as a driving factor of business performance in the Portuguese business environment, and aims to identify barriers and success factors to its implementation. The dissertation focuses on three case studies: the companies Lemon Jelly, Skizo Shoes and Vintage for a Cause. Interviews were conducted with those responsible for the entities (qualitative analysis) and financial and economic indicators were evaluated (quantitative analysis). Some of the difficulties encountered in implementing the CE were the lack of technical know-how, low incentives and consumers' lack of knowledge about the concept. These obstacles were mitigated through strategies such as greater information sharing among stakeholders, more favorable tax policies and support funds, and greater global awareness. There was a positive correlation between circularity and business performance, with the companies studied showing results above the average for their sector in all the indicators evaluated.
