Abstract

The aim of this study, was to identify the factors that the elementary school teacher mostly takes into account, when using a subject nomination’ scales, in order to identify students with outstanding skills. Participants were eight teachers (seven women, one man), and 195 students (98 women, 97 men) registered in third, fourth and fifth grades of a public school located in Iztapalapa, Mexico. Instruments were: Test of Creative Thinking Figural Version A (Torrance, 2008), Raven’s Test of Progressive Matrices (Raven, Raven & Court, 1993), Task Commitment Scale (Zacatelco, 2005): Academic Self-concept Test (Chavez, 2014) Subject’s Nomination List (Zacatelco, Chavez & González, 2014), and a modified version of two scales: the Antisocial Attitudes and Beliefs Scale-Revised (Butler, Parry & Fearon, 2015), and the Prosocial Tendencies Measure-Revised (Carlo, Hausmann, Christiansen & Randall, 2003). We applied a Pearson’s statistical test to identify correlations between nomination and the rest of factors. Results showed a negative correlation between nomination and antisocial behavior reported by students (r = -0,208 **). The other factors showed positive correlations. There was a bigger association among nomination with intelligence (r = 0.251 **), academic self-concept (r = 0.205 **) and task commitment (r = 0.189 **). This indicates that teachers pay less attention to creativity and prosocial behaviors reported by student’s, and they avoid to select those students who report antisocial behaviors. We conclude the need to highlight the importance of creativity as an indicator of outstanding skills, and to verify whether the students who accept to perform anti-social behaviors actually show lower indicators of outstanding skills. This study was supported by project: PAPIIT IN308116. “Strategies to promote prosocial behavior in children with and without outstanding skills, in a poor context”.
