Abstract

We aim to explain here what we are naming the “lively humanism” of Francis Borgia (a militant humanism, that is, an activist, not merely a literary or theoretical one) saving thus the memory of our protagonist from the double dilemma, which turns out to have been contradictory by a good part of historiography, since some have accused him, from the outside, to be a fraudster of the Franciscan heritage and some others, from the inside of the Society of Jesus, to have betrayed the “spirit of Ignatius”. Francis Borgia did not yearn for the medieval past but rather was, as a protagonist of his times, a Renaissance man who the Baroque period sanctified and whose tree of humanism has been concealed by the forest of saintliness.
