Abstract

Los antibióticos han marcado un antes y un después en la calidad de vida de las personas. Los antibióticos, las vacunas y buenas prácticas sanitarias son considerados grandes éxitos de la medicina del siglo XX. Su uso excesivo y descontrolado en medicina y la veterinaria ha conllevado una serie de riesgos como la resistencia a los antibióticos, se ha advertido en los últimos años de sus graves consecuencias. La resistencia a los antibióticos se ha tratado de manera extensa desde el punto de vista sanitario pero últimos estudios han demostrado el protagonismo que desempeñan las Estaciones Depuradoras de Agua Residual (EDAR), al reunir las condiciones necesarias para la propagación y difusión de la resistencia a los antibióticos al medio ambiente. La presencia de genes de resistencia a antibióticos o ARG (del inglés, antibiotic resistance genes) y bacterias resistentes a antibióticos (ARB) en medios acuáticos se ha ido incrementando en los últimos años como consecuencia del elevado consumo de antibióticos a nivel mundial. Se han detectado ARB en aguas residuales urbanas, líquidos residuales hospitalarios, lodos cloacales, aguas subterráneas y en ríos contaminados con descargas de aguas residuales. Este trabajo busca presentar un resumen breve, sobre el comportamiento de las bacterias al estar sujetas a presiones selectivas debido a los antibióticos y el desarrollo de resistencia en las mismas y del papel que desempeñan los distintos procesos del tipo biológico, químico o físico de depuración frente a los antibióticos en las aguas residuales.
