Mente e “mente”

Abstract

Antes de perguntar “o que é a mente?” devemos indagar “o que entendemospor ‘mente’”? A compreensão vem primeiro na ordem da explicaçãoe da análise. Tentarei, portanto, responder à segunda perguntausando um método de análise do significado, inspirado nos contextualistasem filosofia da linguagem, um método que respeita o uso efetivoe comum que constitui sempre nosso ponto de partida, e que permiteisolar um núcleo de sentido. Esse núcleo de sentido é modulado emcontexto; podemos assim marcar as pequenas diferenças que sempreaparecem num contexto específico de uso. É minha convicção que partedos problemas encontrados na filosofia da mente vem do fato de que“mente” não é um termo de espécie natural e não parece designar algohomogêneo e bem unificado. Nosso conceito de mente é atrelado aosusos da palavra. O objetivo da primeira parte é encontrar o núcleo desentido associado ao termo “mente” e que uma análise contextualistado significado tem como objetivo de revelar. Em resposta à primeirapergunta, tentarei apresentar uma visão geral da mente como algo nãosubstancial, de natureza representacional, que depende do funcionamentoeletroquímico do cérebro, mas que não pode possuir uma localizaçãono cérebro.
