Aceratherium alfambrense sp. n., nuevo rinocerótido del Vallesiense Superior de Teruel (España)

Abstract

En el yacimiento de La Roma 2 (Alfambra, Teruel), localidad casi desconocida del Vallesiense Superior, han sido hallados restos de tres especies distintas de rinocerótidos. Una de ellas la identificamos con Dicerorhinus schleiermacheri. Algunos restos corresponden a Aceratherium incisivum. La tercera constituye una nueva forma de Aceratherium, A. alfambrense sp.n., cuyo estudio es el objeto de este trabajo. Todos los restos asignados a la nueva especie corresponden al esqueleto postcraneal, principalmente tarsales y metatarsales. Llama la atención la gran escasez de piezas dentarias, no sólo de rinoceronte (únicamente seis dientes de D. schleiermacheri) sino también de otros taxones (carnívoros, proboscídeos, Hipparion). Aceratherium alfambrense sp.n. es una especie directamente relacionada con A.simorrense, de la cual difiere por su mayor talla y robustez.
