Abstract

Cet article examine les relations entre pratiques de pêche et construction du genre chez les Bajo de l’île Tarupa Besar (atoll de Taka Bonerate, Sulawesi Sud, Indonésie). En analysant une part de la diversité de leurs pratiques halieutiques, l’article montre comment la mer est sexuée . De l’île au large, une polarité se dessine entre l’espace domestique intérieur, perçu comme sécurisé et associé à l’idéal féminin, et le domaine maritime, vu comme hostile et associé à un idéal masculin viril. En étudiant la dimension sexuante des pêches, c’est-à-dire la manière dont le genre y est façonné et se déploie au travers de relations à l’environnement marin, cet article souligne son ambivalence. D’une part, c’est en s’investissant plus ou moins dans ces pratiques que les Bajo se conforment ou au contraire, dépassent les normes de genre. D’autre part, en mettant en correspondance les caractéristiques des différents milieux qui composent l’atoll et les distinctions de genre, ces pratiques halieutiques participent à leur essentialisation et à celle du régime de pouvoir associé. En l’occurrence, c’est dans la pêche au large que le viril se confond avec le masculin et que se constitue une « masculinité hégémonique » (Connell 2014).
