Abstract

The comic strip, a combination of text and image, was born closely linked to the press, although throughout the 20th century it evolved, became independent and created its own language and codes. At the end of the 1920s, a character called Tintin appeared in the children's supplement of a Belgian newspaper, created by Georges Remi (Hergé), a cartoonist with the vocation of a great reporter. Founder of the French-speaking school later known as the clear line, Hergé gave Tintin a profession, journalist, and the 23 albums of his adventures, over almost 50 years, are full of resources and references to the media. This thesis analyses, on the basis of this work, the relationship between comics and mass media, and defines how the role of the journalist is described and developed within the framework of a specific graphic comic strip and what the function of the mass media is as a narrative resource and as element of the story. The hypothesis aims to show that the protagonist's role as a journalist gradually fades into that of an adventurous hero with the skills of a private investigator. In its place, the media, together with the other characters in the saga, occupy an increasingly predominant place, until they completely take over the story, generating, in an unusual way, noise, chaos and lack of communication.
