Los petroglifos del Cuzco

Abstract

De las muchas sorpresas que reserva el estudio de la edad precolombina del Perú, es esta del descubrimiento de las petro-pictografías y petroglifos del Cuzco una de las mayores. Acostumbrados a solo considerar los monumentos de la cultura incaica, poca o ninguna atención se dispensó a los restos arqueológicos que no fueran muros, ruinas de edifi cios o fragmentos de alfarería. En los alrededores del Cuzco poco frecuentadas fueron las cuevas de Kenko, Chakan y Patallajta: unos cuantos las conocíamos con alguna amplitud. En una de las excursiones verifi cadas con el alumnado de arqueología de la universidad cusqueña, constatamos ciertas misteriosas inscripciones en negro y rojo en el interior de la cueva de Patallajta que, a primera vista, parecían burdos dibujos al carbón, obra de algún rapaz que por aquellos sitios soledosos “cimarroneaba”. Mas, deteniendo nuestro examen pudimos descubrir una verdadera representación pictográfica, cuyo estudio iniciamos.
