Acute paraspinal compartment syndrome

Abstract

A 46-year-old healthy man developed an acute compartment syndrome in his left erector spinae muscle after crossfit training. He was diagnosed and treated with a three-day delay. Due to a lack of awareness and knowledge of this sporadic syndrome, he was operated on 72 hoursafter onset of symptoms. The surgery dramatically reduced his level of pain and improved his biochemical assay. Two months after surgery, there was still local fluid accumulation due to the continuous breakdown of muscle mass, resulting in increased local colloid osmotic pressure. However, the patient is now fully mobilised, self-reliant, and without discomfort.
