A Stage I Archaeological Survey of Portions of Northern Burlington County, New Jersey

Abstract

A preliminary archaeological survey has been completed as part of the overall assessment of the environmental impact of the proposed northern Burlington County regional sewerage system. As a result of this survey a number of cultural resources, including both historic and prehistoric properties, have been identified in or near the project area. Most of the sites recognized by this research will be unaffected by the proposed undertaking, however, five prehistoric sites are likely to be adversely impacted by the project and should be protected from loss or degradation in connection with it. These sites are potentially eligible for inclusion on the National Register, but additional investigation will be required before successful nominations can be advanced or before the full extent of the anticipated adverse effects to the sites can be understood. Eventually a construction design, which is concordant with the goals of historical preservation and archaeology as well as with those of sound engineering practice, must be developed. The evaluation of such a design will necessarily require the cooperation of all parties concerned.
