Abstract

Heinrich Wilhelm Schott (1794-1865), botanist and gardener. Born at Brno (today: Czech Republic) January 7th 1794, died at Schönbrunn (today within the city of Vienna, Austria) March 5th 1865, son of the gardener Heinrich Schott (1759-1819).- Schott attended botanical lectures of Nikolaus Joseph von Jacquin (1727-1817) and Joseph Franz von Jacquin (1766-1839) and assisted his father Heinrich from 1809 to 1813 as a gardener at the Botanical Garden of the Vienna University. In 1815 he was assigned to the “Flora Austriaca” of the Belvedere Garden. From 1817 to 1821 Schott took part in the Austrian Brazilian expedition together with Johann Christian Mikan (1769-1844), Johann Natterer (1787-1843) and Johann Baptist Emanuel Pohl (1782-1834) and was eager in collecting natural history objects in Brazil. Back in Austria Schott was assistant at the Botanical Garden of Schönbrunn from 1821 to 1828, from 1828 onwards leading gardener and from 1845 onwards even director of the Schönbrunn gardens. The today alpine garden at Belvedere (Vienna) arose from Schott’s collections of alpine plants. Scientifically Schott did mainly research on Araceae and soon became an experienced expert in this field. His important Araceae-herbarium was nearly completely destroyed during World War II. Heinrich Wilhelm Schott (1794-1865), Botaniker und Gärtner. Geb. Biographische Daten: F. A. Stafleu & R. S. Cowan, Taxonomic literature, 2. Aufl., Bd. 5, 1985, S. 304-309 / J. H.
