Abstract

stato condotto uno studio morfologico su 96 esemplari di Vipera ammodytes di varie isole egee. Le popolazioni egee di questa vipera vengono tradizionalmente assegnate alla sottospecie meridio nalis Boulenger, 1903. Nuove evidenze per��, basate su caratteri di grossa rilevanza, sembrano por tare alla distinzione di due forme geografiche, una forma cicladica e una forma delle Sporadi set tentrionali. Nelle isole Cicladi le piccole dimensioni di queste vipere sono probabilmente correlate alla dieta, costituita in prevalenza da piccoli Sauri e da Chilopodi (il basso numero di dorsali, 19 nel 20% degli esemplari, potrebbe essere indicativo di questa tendenza alla riduzione della taglia). Le popolazioni di Paros e Antiparos, isole in cui non vive Podarcis e quindi ospiti di una microevo luzione pi�� attiva, si distinguono, fra l���altro, per il basso numero di ventrali; esse vengono cos�� asse gnate a un nuovo taxon, Vipera ammodytes buchholzi ssp. nov. Nelle Sporadi settentrionali Vipera ammodytes ha dimensioni maggiori e particolarit�� di folidosi che la avvicinano alle popolazioni con specifiche della Grecia centro-settentrionale.
