Development of bio-based pigments for paints and coatings

Abstract

Webinar “Painting a Bio-based Future with PERFECOAT” Achievements and current challenges of creating sustainable solutions in paints and coatings - 27 August 2024, 13:00 to 15:00 CEST, online The EU- & CBE JU funded research project PERFECOAT project aims to develope high-performance, bio-based industrial wood and decorative paints and coatings with a minimum of 25% bio-based components. Successful solutions will support the shift towards sustainable and eco-friendly alternatives in the paint and coatings industry and thus the pursuit of a climate-neutral Europe. On 27 August 2024, from 13:00 to 15:00 CEST, the PERFECOAT team will present its achievements and latest results in a final webinar, while also discussing the identified obstacles and challenges. This event will delve into various key accomplishments and present crucial results that will enable industry stakeholders to opt for greener solutions in their own formulations and applications. Development of Bio-Based Binders: Discover how alginates, xanthan, and xylan have been successfully utilized to create effective bio-based binders. Natural Pigment and Dye Innovations: Learn about the sustainable colorants produced from yeast and fungi, offering eco-friendly alternatives to traditional pigments. Enhanced Paint Properties: Explore the advancements in paint durability and performance through the integration of functional nano materials and fillers. Sustainability and Safety Assessment: Gain insights into comprehensive assessments comparing the sustainability, social sustainability, health and safety, toxicology and performance of these bio-based paint components with conventional fossil-based products. Formulation and Testing: Learn how the performance of the final formulations is tested and evaluated in different applications. This online events offers the opportunity to meet the partners online, ask live questions and learn more about the bio-based solutions in the paint and coatings industry. Agenda: 13:00 Introduction PERFECOAT Project (Alexander Wentzel, SINTEF) 13:05 Binders (Morten Frøseth, SINTEF; Srdjan Gavrilović, TalTech) 13:25 Pigments (Young Park, INRAE) 13:45 Filler & Functional Nano Material (Brian Wabende, BioEnvision) 14:05 Safety and Sustainability of Bio-based Coatings (Andy Booth, SINTEF OCEAN; Kamal Azrague, SINTEF) 14:25 Results on End-use Applications (Christine Louis, Evonik; Roland Steinrücken, Remmers) 14:45 Q&A 15:00 Closing remarks (Alexander Wentzel, SINTEF) The PERFECOAT project receives funding from the Bio-based Industries Joint Undertaking (JU) under the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement No 101022370. The JU receives support from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme and the Bio-based Industries Consortium.
