Abstract

This paper narrates a journey, that of the setting up of MuDib, Milano-Bicocca University’s distributed museum. This is a museum institution with an unconventional structure. It does not occupy a defined physical space, but rather a relational dimension, with the direct engagement of several types of audience. Over the centuries, universities around the world have set up museums within their walls: focused on disciplinary knowledge and founded with educational and research aims, these museums boast a long and glorious tradition. In contrast, the University of Milano-Bicocca, which celebrates its first twenty-five years of existence in 2023, has taken a different path, opting to draw out the value of its existing heritage by creating a distributed museum. This museum in the making, whose work of cataloguing and digitizing is ongoing, also pursues the aim of fostering connections: between the University’s departments, by amplifying their research, with other university museums, by remaining in constant dialogue with them, and with the wider community, in terms of official cultural institutions and all bodies, associations, and citizens with an interest in engaging with Bicocca’s heritage. One of the first initiatives of MuDiB was the curatorship of a small exhibition entitled Birth: Birth is Not Enough, which opened on 28 September 2023 and included a series of related events across the campus.
