Mots-clés: silence, pouvoir, symbolisme, matérialité, stratégie Abstract: This study proposes to consider silence in its practical dimension, as a conduct, an aesthetic or political hold. We investigate several disciplines - linguistics, anthropology, sociolinguistics, musicology, art, etc. – to be able to underline the functions of silence through its material, symbolic and political modalities that also appeal to the analysis of discourse. Even if "there is no absolute silence" as Cage asserts, one can still list various types of silences: the eloquent silence (Ephratt 2008), the psycholinguistic, interactive and socio-cultural silence (Bruneau 1973) or its graphic counterpart, the typographical white (Dessons 2005) as well as silence as the element allowing the alternation of speaking turns (Orecchioni 1995) and many others. Keywords: silence, power, symbolism, materiality, strategy
