The Regional Online Information System for Scientific Journals in Latin America, the Caribbean, Spain and Portugal, Latindex, has its origins in the 1990s with the mission of giving visibility to scientific and academic journals in Ibero-American countries. The system evolved in parallel with the dynamics of scientific communication, so that in addition to promoting good editorial practices in the region, proposing criteria for the selection of journals and disseminating written scientific production, it became an agent of change, where it proactively generates actions and processes to strengthen open access to scientific knowledge generated in Ibero-America. Therefore, the aim of this paper is to highlight the actions that Latindex has carried out in the promotion of open access. Latindex has been recognised as a bridge for the circulation of scientific knowledge in Latin America as it promotes dialogue between experts and scientific agents throughout the region and rescues local experiences in the editing and publication of journals. The synergy generated by the 34 experts that make up the System strengthens the strategies that contribute to the discussion and analysis of policies and evaluation processes of scientific work in the region and to the consolidation of open access. Latindex's actions in support of open science include increasing the visibility, interoperability and quality of journals in the region, and influencing science policy by signing the declaration of support and recognition to UNESCO for the Open Science Recommendation, which was approved by 193 countries in November 2021. Latindex also participated in the Mexico Declaration in favour of the Latin American non-commercial open access ecosystem. One of the characteristics of Latindex is its vocation for teaching. All its members frequently participate in academic activities where they discuss the strengthening and improvement of the quality of scientific journals, as well as promoting open science and advocating for non-commercial open access in the region. Latindex's online course on Publishing and Visibility of Scientific Journals has a specific module to raise awareness of the importance and good practices of open science. Finally, Latindex also contributes to open science through its indexing features. As a quality criterion for entry into the Catalogue 2.0, the journal is required to offer data such as: The use of persistent identifiers, interoperability protocols, metadata standard and declaration of licenses for the use of information, all in accordance with FAIR principles.
