Abstract

This work explores an innovative educational experience that integrates education, contemporary art, and the STEAM approach (anchored by the "A" for Arts) in initial teacher training. Its objective is to develop digital, audiovisual, expressive, and critical competences aligned with the educational challenges of the 2030 Agenda. The research seeks to empower future teachers as active agents in building a transformative, inclusive, and sustainable education, fostering their professional autonomy, social awareness, and technological literacy. The methodology adopted is qualitative in nature, grounded in project-based learning through artistic STEAM projects (PBL-STEAM), with an interdisciplinary and participatory design. University students designed and created audiovisual pieces referencing contemporary art (digital collage, video creation, installation), using various applications (such as Scratch) and open-source audio and video editing tools. These productions addressed themes such as cultural diversity, sustainability, gender equity, critical consumption, and social justice, thus contributing to a contextualized and socially engaged education. The results reveal a significant improvement in students’ technological and audiovisual competence, as well as in their ability to generate visual narratives with pedagogical, ethical, and social intent. The experience also highlights the strengthening of critical thinking, creativity, and collaborative work, along with a positive disposition towards the conscious integration of technology in the classroom from an inclusive and transformative perspective. In conclusion, the combination of contemporary art and STEAM projects fosters the development of a teacher profile committed to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), capable of promoting a critical, creative, and digitally empowered citizenship. This methodological approach enhances comprehensive teacher education and offers a replicable model for advancing toward a more equitable, inclusive education in dialogue with the social challenges of our time.
