Panthera onca (Linnaeus, 1758). Syst. Nat., 10th ed., 1:42. TYPE LOCALITY: Brazil, Pernambuco. DISTRIBUTION: N. Argentina and S. Brazil to Peru, north to Oaxaca (Mexico) to S. Texas and N.C. Arizona, N. Baja California (Mexico), S. California, and S.W. and C. New Mexico (U.S.A.). COMMENT: Type locality subsequently fixed by Thomas, 1911. Proc. Zool. Soc. Lond., 1911:135. Frequently exhibits melanism (AHS). PROTECTED STATUS: CITES - Appendix I and U.S. ESA - Endangered. ISIS NUMBER: 5301412007002003001.
