Abstract

41. Dermacentor variabilis (Say, 1821). A Nearctic species, but with a few records from the Neotropical Region, whose adults are usually found on Artiodactyla (several families), Carnivora (several families), and Perissodactyla: Equidae; nymphs and larvae are commonly recovered from Rodentia (several families). All parasitic stages have also been collected from Mammalia (several orders) and less often from Galliformes: Phasianidae; immature stages have been found on Caprimulgiformes: Apodidae, Passeriformes (several families), and Squamata: Agamidae. Dermacentor variabilis is a very frequent parasite of humans. M: Say (1821), under the name Ixodes variabilis and given its current status in Banks (1907) F: Koch (1844a), under the name Dermacentor electus, a synonym of Dermacentor variabilis N: Hooker et al.
