Dermacentor steini

Authors: Guglielmone, Alberto A.; Petney, Trevor N.; Robbins, Richard G.;
Abstract

37. Dermacentor steini (Schulze, 1933b). An Australasian and Oriental species whose adults are usually found on Artiodactyla: Suidae, but they have also been collected from Mammalia (several orders) and rarely from Squamata: Pythonidae, Elapidae and Varanidae; adults and the undescribed nymph have been recovered from Rodentia: Muridae. Dermacentor steini is a sporadic parasite of humans. M: Schulze (1933b), under the name Indocentor steini, and given its current status in Wassef and Hoogstraal (1986b) F: Schulze (1933b), under the name Indocentor steini N: unknown L: unknown Redescriptions M: Wassef and Hoogstraal (1986b) F: Wassef and Hoogstraal (1986b) Note: Apanaskevich and Apanaskevich (2016) state that the illustrations of Dermacentor steini in Sun and Xu (2013) correspond, in fact, to Dermacentor tamokensis. Both species, Dermacentor tamokensis and Dermacentor steini, are found in Malaysia. Ernieenor et al. (2020) present morphological characteristics and molecular profiles of populations of Dermacentor steini from Malaysia without differentiating this species from Dermacentor tamokensis; therefore, the data in Ernieenor et al. (2020) require confirmation.
