Family Carangidae The limits of carangid genera are in many cases poorly defined. This is in part a consequence of some fundamental problems in the delimitation of generic and sub-generic taxa within the family (Gunn 1990). A particular case in point is the separation of the large genus Caranx Lacepède into a series of smaller genera including Carangoides Bleeker, Selar Bleeker, Alepes Swainson, Atule Jordan & Jordan, Decapterus Sleeker, Pseudocaranx Bleeker, Ulua Jordan & Snyder, Uraspis Bleeker and Caranx (sensu stricto) (Gunn 1990).
