BIOQUÍMICA CLÍNICA DA ATEROSCLEROSE PROVOCADA POR HIPERHOMOCISTEINEMIA

Abstract

Nas ultimas decadas, o nivel plasmatico elevado de homocisteina tem sido considerado um fator de risco independente e prevalente para a aterosclerose. A homocisteina e um aminoacido sulfurado envolvido em diversas vias metabolicas. Niveis elevados desse aminoacido no plasma, a hiperhomocisteinemia, podem ser atribuidos a ocorrencia de defeitos geneticos de algumas enzimas do metabolismo da homocisteina ou a deficiencias nutricionais das vitaminas B6, B12 e folato, ou pode, ainda, estar relacionada a outros fatores de risco para a aterosclerose. Foram sugeridos alguns mecanismos que esclarecem o dano vascular causado pela hiperhomocisteinemia e diversos estudos demonstram que a suplementacao vitaminica, principalmente de acido folico, resulta em reducao eficiente da concentracao de homocisteina no plasma. Nesta revisao, sera abordado o metabolismo da homocisteina e sua relacao com a aterosclerose incluindo causas, mecanismos patogenicos e tratamento da hiperhomocisteinemia. 10.5216/ref.v8i1.13812
