At a time when China is establishing itself, economically and geopolitically, as the “nation of tomorrow”, how can we understand the production of “sinofuturist” discourses and imaginary representations, taking into account the heterogeneous interpretations of this concept? This article examines four different ways of projecting a “Chinese” future: “Sinofuturism and techno-orientalism”; “Sinofuturism and post-orientalism”; “Sinofuturism and state futurism”; and “Sinofuturism without China”. This study enables us to show how these often contradictory and conflicting discourses nevertheless overlap in a form of denial of what Johannes Fabian calls “co-temporality”.
