La reconnaissance du concept de formation tout au long de la vie constitue desormais un acquis pour les pays de l’OCDE. Avant d’en arriver a ce consensus, les evolutions ont ete multiformes. L’auteur en decrit les diverses phases et identifie les points de rencontre entre les diverses acceptions. Il met en garde aussi contre le risque inherent a tout consensus lorsque la tendance au rapprochement vide de sens ce qui devrait porter l’innovation. Pour que le concept soit innovant et porteur d’espoir, l’auteur inventorie les consequences de sa mise en pratique sur les politiques d’education.
