Abstract

L’existence est-elle autre chose que la vie* ? Traditionnellement, la vie se définit par ses caractéristiques biologiques alors que l’existence est dotée de l’épaisseur de la conscience. La vie renvoie alors à l’animalité et l’existence à l’humanité. Si nous examinons l’existence d’un point de vue pragmatique, nous pouvons la considérer comme l’expression concrète de la force que nous appelons la vie.Les interventions en travail social s’adressent à l’existence des personnes auxquelles elles sont destinées. Elles visent l’augmentation de l’intensité de leur existence, elles cherchent à ce que ces personnes effectuent au plus haut degré la puissance* d’exister qui les caractérise. Pourtant, la fonction de normalisation que réalise le travail social, le rôle de « police des pauvres » (Castel, 1995, p. 211) qu’il est parfois amené à jouer ont aussi pour effet une limitation de l’existence des individus. Ceux-ci, pour s’intégrer, doivent apprendre à renoncer à certaines de leurs aspirations et à adopter des comportements normalisés acceptables par l’environnement. Les existences des bénéficiaires de l’action sociale, comme de tout être vivant en société, se déroulent ainsi entre augmentation et limitation de leur intensité. La vulnérabilité des bénéficiaires résultant des difficultés qu’ils ont rencontrées dans leur existence, pour certains, leur inexistence sociale due à un déficit de reconnaissance* a pour effet qu’ils ne peuvent tirer de leur environnement la puissance leur permettant d’accroître l’intensité de leur existence.
