Abstract

Objetos asiáticos o de inspiración asiática cruzaron océanos, continentes incluso América, difundiendo el gusto por las sedas, porcelanas y lacas, y muchas veces fueron reinventados en piezas producidas por artistas indígenas, africanos y mestizos, con materiales de la tierra. Esta categoría de objetos tuvo una importante recepción y difusión en el Brasil del siglo XVIII, ya que encontraron diálogo con tradiciones ancestrales amerindias, en el sofisticado trabajo de artistas, escultores y pintores locales, hombres y mujeres. Así los objetos tradicionales de las culturas indígenas, como las cuias (frutos de la cuieira, Crescentia cujete), fueron dotados de nuevos significados y/o preparados para la exportación, a partir de coincidencias en el campo artístico, como el uso de barniz negro elaborado a partir de la cáscara del cumatezeiro (Myrcia atrametifera) por mujeres indígenas de la Amazonía, comparado a la mejor laca de China (Rhus vernicifera o Rhus verniciflua). A su vez, el conocimiento de motivos surgidos del repertorio asiático, a través de la circulación de porcelanas y textiles, se reflejó en el mobiliario y la decoración. Los casos por presentar de la Amazonía brasileña – por medio del estudio de documentos y colecciones –, reflejan el desarrollo de poderosas interconexiones entre América y Asia, así como apropiaciones, disputas y resistencias.
