Sertões coloniais de Minas Gerais

Abstract

O presente artigo tem como objetivo explorar a constituição de uma rede de circulação de mercadorias estabelecida entre o litoral e o sertão de Minas Gerais no Brasil colonial. Com base em fontes históricas consultadas no Arquivo Nacional e na Biblioteca Nacional, o artigo explora os fluxos comerciais, rotas, comerciantes e produtos que conectaram o litoral e os sertões de Minas entre 1750 e 1822. Os sertões eram vistos pela Historiografia clássica brasileira como espaços não incorporados à dinâmica mercantil do espaço nacional. O discurso aplicado ao sertão é revelador de valores culturais, geralmente negativos, que o definiam como espaço vazio, desconhecido e perigoso. Demonstra-se no artigo que litoral e sertão não eram espaços opostos, e sim complementares, e que os sertões de Minas eram espaços dinâmicos e conectados a distintas redes de comércio no Brasil.
