Abstract

En una serie de artículos conexos, este libro reconstruye la significación de diecinueve palabras clave del lenguaje sociopolítico inca prehispánico y colonial (p. ej., apu, ayllu, kuraqa, qhapaq, suyu, willka). Una de las principales fuentes de este estudio son las más de 1000 páginas de textos que fueron escritos en quechua entre el siglo XVI y principios del siglo XIX, es decir, mientras siguió existiendo una “república de indios” vertebrada por instituciones y élites propias, que utilizaban el quechua como idioma de gobierno. El autor investiga la formación de estas palabras y su evolución semántica a medida que cambiaron los contextos históricos hasta llegar a sus significados actuales en las diferentes variedades de la lengua. También saca a la luz las expresiones iconográficas que algunos de estos conceptos tuvieron tanto en la época prehispánica como colonial. Combinando filología, iconografía y antropología histórica, este libro esboza una comprensión nueva de los sistemas políticos creados por los andinos en los últimos siglos prehispánicos y del devenir de estas instituciones hasta hoy.
