Cet article se propose d’étudier la manière dont le genre du merveilleux-scientifique, dont Maurice Renard a aspiré à être un ardent rénovateur à la suite de Jules Verne et d’H. G. Wells, utilise les sciences et pseudo-sciences de l’ophtalmologie, de la catoptrique et de l’optique physiologique dans un corpus étendu de récits, souvent illustrés. L’objectif de cette étude sera, d’une part, de mettre au jour l’influence des sciences et pseudo-sciences optiques sur un corpus diversifié de récits merveilleux-scientifiques au tournant du xix e et du xx e siècles et, d’autre part, de souligner la nécessité de l’interdisciplinarité pour aborder ce corpus. L’épistémocritique gagne à s’appuyer sur les nouvelles tendances de l’histoire de l’art qui s’ouvre à l’archéologie des médias et aux Études visuelles.
