SOVIET HERITAGE AS ETHICAL IMPERATIVE FOR CONTEMPORARY LITHUANIAN ARCHITECTURE

Authors: Vaidas Petrulis;

SOVIET HERITAGE AS ETHICAL IMPERATIVE FOR CONTEMPORARY LITHUANIAN ARCHITECTURE

Abstract

The paper analyses ethical imperatives for the soviet time heritage in contemporary Lithuanian architecture. The main statement of this paper is that the soviet period is an important part in the 20th century history of Lithuanian architecture. However, because of economic, cultural and ideological changes after the collapse of the Soviet Union this unprotected by law architectural heritage gradually disappears. The paper discusses the idea that only ethical consideration of contemporary society towards this problem can change the situation. Also, it is pointed out that the ethical responsibility lies not only on architects and construction developers but also on the entire society, which supports the idea to have this architecture as a part of our city in order to reflect its cultural and architectural history. The position regarding this part of heritage should be much more creative compared with traditional attitude towards architectural heritage.
