
La toma de decisiones constituye una parte esencial de la accion gubernamental. El gobierno tiene la responsabilidad de utilizar los instrumentos a su disposicion que le permitan tomar las mejores decisiones posibles. Este articulo sostiene que el analisis costo-beneficio, adecuadamente utilizado, puede mejorar las politicas ambientales y de salud publica. Para ello, se explican las razones de por que resulta necesaria su aplicacion. Ademas, se describen los origenes de su incorporacion en los Estados Unidos. Asimismo, se analizan algunas de las deficiencias de su aplicacion actual, detallando alternativas para su correccion.
