Abstract

Vol: 173, 2022 Socio-économie de l’élevage de la pintade dans le Département de la TandjiléOuest, Tchad ABSTRACT: Socio-economics of guinea fowl breeding in the Tandjilé-Ouest Department, Chad Objective: to evaluate the socio-economic importance of guinea fowl breeding in the department of Tandjile-Ouest in the Sudanian zone of Chad. Methodology and Results: Methodology and Results: A cross-sectional and retrospective survey was conducted among 320 randomly selected producers in four sub-prefectures (Baktchoro, Bologo, Kelo and Kolon). The survey was conducted during the months of August and October 2021. Guinea fowl rearing is an activity practiced mainly by men (97%), who are married (96%), of Marba ethnicity (51%), and of Christian faith (93%). Primary (39%) and secondary (45%) producers were in the majority with more than 10 years of experience in this activity. The oldest were those in the sub-prefecture of Kolon (about 13 years) and Baktchoro (11 years). Guinea fowl are the most common poultry in the study area. Guinea fowl are produced from eggs purchased and incubated by the hens. The reasons for raising them were sale, donation, consumption and sacrifice. Per laying season, the average number of eggs sold was 1,754 and the average number consumed was 124 per producer. The funds generated by the sale of guinea fowl and guinea fowl eggs were approximately 97,010 CFA francs (155.54 USD) per producer and 31,042,670 CFA francs (49,773.51 USD) for all producers in the study area. Conclusion and Application of Results: This production plays an important socio-economic role in improving the sources of income and food for producers in the department of Tandjilé Ouest. The identification of constraints and the supervision of this type of breeding would allow for a better organization of production (eggs or guinea fowl) and a greater improvement in farmers' income.
