Abstract

Este trabajo es parte de un proyecto más amplio de estudio de la música popular entre los jóvenes, y como tal procura observar el contexto de emergencia de una de sus expresiones recientes más masivas: la cumbia villera. Si bien posteriormente fueasimilada por las industrias culturales -en especial las discográficas- su originalidad fue tal que, pese a coincidir con el creciente acceso a internet y las posibilidades que este conlleva, durante un tiempo -considerablemente extenso en un contexto plenamente globalizado-, fue una expresión artística primordialmente marginal. En este sentido, la cumbia villera explicita la violencia sistémica experimentada por décadas por los sectores marginalizados del conurbano bonaerense, y la forma descarnada que asumió provocó el miedo y la intolerancia de las clases medias y altas, e incluso la intervención del Estado. La polémica suscitada en torno a este estilo musicalconfirma su excepcionalidad en la cultura popular: inicialmente inasimilable por amplios sectores sociales e instituciones públicas y semipúblicas, emergió y se mantuvo –hasta el momento de la manipulación por parte de las grandes industrias culturales-como una manifestación artística de aquello que Walter Benjamin (2010 B) llamaría “carácter”, algo que no se podía anticipar.
