Abstract

Tite-Live, VII, 28, est la seule source antique à rapporter de manière détaillée la fondation du temple de Juno Moneta sur la citadelle. Pour lui, cette fondation serait l’accomplissement d’un vœu prononcé en 345, lors d’une bataille contre les Aurunques, par le dictateur Camille, assisté dans cette campagne par le maître de la cavalerie Gn. Manlius Capitolinus. Ce récit entre nettement dans la catégorie des légendes de temple, et de nombreux éléments semblent faire écho à la légende républicaine de M. Manlius Capitolinus, sauveur de la citadelle lors du siège gaulois : l’identité des magistrats de 345, les coïncidences topographiques, mais aussi les prodiges qui suivent la fondation du temple apparaissent comme autant de rappels de la geste manlienne et surtout du destin tragique du héros capitolin.
