Comparison and evaluation of the efficacy of plain polyglactin 910 versus chlorohexidine coated polyglactin 910 sutures in periodontal flap surgery

Abstract

Aim:To evaluate the efficacy of plain polyglactin 910 resorbable sutures (3-0) versus chlorhexidine coated polyglactin 910 resorbable sutures (3–0) in periodontal flap surgery. Design: An experimental in -vitro split mouth study design. Materials and Methods:Conventional flap surgeries were performed and sutured with either Plain polyglactin 910 resorbable sutures (control group) or Chlorhexidine coated polyglactin 910 resorbable sutures (experimental group). Visible plaque index, healing index was evaluated on 7th day , 15th day and 30th day post surgically .The sutures were removed on the 7th day and collected in saline and further the sample was streaked on blood agar plates and inoculated and incubated for 72 hours, after which the formed colonies were counted manually. Statistical analysis used: Chi-square test and independent t-test were used. The data obtained was further analyzed with the help of SPSS software. Results: Chlorhexidine coated sutures showed better healing ascompared to plain sutures and were statistically significant. The concentration of bacteria was less with chlorhexidine coated sutures than the plain sutures, but statistically insignificant. Conclusion:It can be concluded that plain or chlorhexidine coated sutures can be used in periodontal surgeries to reduce the bacterial load at surgical sites and chlorhexidine coated sutures showed better efficacy at healing and reducing bacterial load. Key Words:Antibacterial sutures, chlorhexidine coated sutures, plain polyglactin 910 sutures, flap surgery. Key message: Chlorhexidine coated sutures may be used as they showed better efficacy at healing and reducing bacterial load.
