Las urnas zapotecas (Estado de Oaxaca, México): una iconografía del espacio y del tiempo

Abstract

La cultura zapoteca (Estado de Oaxaca, México) es famosa por sus célebres “urnas funerarias”, de las que existen unas 4.000 en el mundo. Conocidas desde principios del siglo XIX, estas piezas han sido objetos de estudios iconográficos que, sin embargo, han incluido numerosas falsificaciones realizadas a raíz de su éxito. Las “urnas” zapotecas fueron el tema de una investigación doctoral realizada por el autor entre 1980 y 1985. Esta, basada en los informes de excavaciones publicados o conservados en los archivos, permitió reunir datos hasta entonces poco tratados, tanto sobre la evolución estilística como sobre su entorno (condiciones de descubrimiento, datación, etc.). Así, ha permitido situar la “urna funeraria” en su contexto arqueológico y cronológico. Sin embargo, hasta ahora este estudio sólo se había publicado parcialmente. Desde hace varios meses, se está realizando un gran esfuerzo para poner a disposición de la comunidad científica estos datos, en gran parte inéditos, permitiendo arrojar nueva luz sobre la evolución de la “urna” en el seno de la sociedad zapoteca. A través de su evolución formal e iconográfica, las “urnas” zapotecas están íntimamente ligadas a la evolución política y sociológica de la civilización zapoteca, y en particular de su capital Monte-Albán.
