Food craving refers to an intense desire to consume a specific type of food. This chapter describes features of food craving (such as the type of foods craved, sex and cultural differences, its distinctiveness from hunger, and psychological theories on the emergence of food cravings) and their role in addiction-like eating behavior. It also discusses strategies for regulating food craving such as psychotherapeutic and technology-assisted approaches. The chapter concludes with an examination of the pivotal role of food craving during eating disorder and obesity treatment, including a discussion of the complex relationship of food craving with dieting and restrained eating.
