La integridad moral

Abstract

La incoherencia entre la teoría y la práctica es uno de los problemas que plantea la filosofía moral. ¿Por qué si sabemos qué debemos hacer, hacemos lo contrario? ¿Por qué pensamos una cosa y decimos o hacemos otra? Aristóteles se refirió al problema con el concepto de akrasía, incontinencia o debilidad de la voluntad; Kant lo hizo con la pregunta que formula al final de la Fundamentación de la metafísica de las costumbres: ¿cómo es posible que la razón pura sea práctica? En este artículo analizo dos cuestiones que explican en parte el problema. En primer lugar, los principios morales son abstractos y no es difícil llegar a un acuerdo sobre ellos; lo difícil es aplicarlos correctamente, una decisión que requiere reflexión y deliberación. En segundo lugar, la concepción actual de la libertad es muy simple y no compromete al individuo con el bien común, lo cual no fomenta el sentido de responsabilidad ni el desarrollo de una conciencia moral autónoma. Corregir esa idea de libertad y asumir responsabilidades por las decisiones que se toman es el reto al que hay que atender para conseguir una integridad moral que merezca tal nombre.
